An interesting brief
of the formation of unity Lodge 5812 and

The Founding of Unity Lodge No. 5812

In 1938 the Provincial Grand Master of the Province of Worcestershire, the Right Worshipful Brother, General Sir Francis Davies, expressed his desire that a new Lodge should be founded in Worcester. To facilitate this request a meeting was held on 17th December 1938 at the Masonic Hall, St Nicholas Street, Worcester. Following fruitful discussions, the meeting concluded that a new Lodge should be founded in Worcester and that the name of of the new Lodge should be called 'Unity Lodge'. A petition signed by fifteen founding members, supported by Page Lodge No. 3378 and the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, was presented to the Grand Master, HRH The Duke of Kent, who accepted the request.

The Pictures below are of the old Masonic Hall to the left and the new and current Masonic Building to the right.

Quite a contrast in buildings, but as the Old Masonic Hall in Trinity Street, Worcester soon "became too small the Lodge moved", to the New Masonic Building at Rainbow Hill Worcester with excellent facilities and also a large Museum which is open to the public, very much worth a visit. www.worcestermasonicmuseum.co.uk.

The Consecration Ceremony of the new 'Unity Lodge 5812' took place on the 22nd July 1939. The Lodge continued to meet regularly throughout the dark days of the Second World War. On the 23rd April 1949, Worshipful Brother P.J. Roberts unveiled in the Lodge Room the Board of Past Masters which he had presented to the Lodge to commemorate his term of office as the Worshipful Master. On the same evening, Worshipful Brother C.R. Knight, who was the Worshipful Master of Page Lodge No. 3378, presented to the Lodge a Past Master's Jewel which had been presented to the first Worshipful Master of Unity Lodge, the late Worshipful Brother, W.M. Ratcliffe. The Past Master's Jewel was presented as an heirloom to the Lodge to be worn by successive immediate Past Masters of Unity Lodge in perpetuity.

The Lodge Crest appears to be showing a group of women, but it represents the 'Unity of Races' who are depicted as peoples of various races and colours whose typical dress shown being worn in that way. 'The Lodge Crest most probably comes from a tablet created by an artist named Alfred Drury R.A. entitled 'The Unity of Races'. It is possible that it comes from one of the panels which Drury made for the exterior frieze above the entrance to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Alfred Drury was born in 1857 and died in 1944. His work consisted mostly of official portraits and sculptures or busts of children.
